BRACHYPELMA: The Red-Leg Tarantulas of Mexico

The two ground breaking, feature length tarantula documentaries contained in this boxset were filmed on location in the Sierra Madre Mountains, which range along much of Mexico’s Pacific coastline.

This region of Mexico is infamous for narcotics and consequently throughout the shoot, the threat of Cartel violence was an ever present worry for the film crew. Written and directed by veteran tarantula collector, researcher and arachnohistorian Andrew M. Smith – the end result is a unique academic field study which contains the first location footage ever filmed of all of Mexico’s striking red-leg tarantulas. Many of these species are now endangered and it is highly likely that the field footage shot of many of these spiders, will be the only record of them in the years to come.

HMS Herald & the emilia mystery

This is a two hour documentary, shot on location, north of the Rio Balsas on the Pacific coast of Mexico. The first part of this film explores the mystery of why the type specimen of Brachypelma emilia was labelled as having been collected in Panama – and tells of the story of its collection by the ships officers of the Royal Naval survey ship HMS Herald. Also included in PART 1 is the first location footage ever shot of Brachypelma hamorii, Brachypelma klaasi and Brachypelma baumgarteni. In the field, Andrew Smith compares B. hamorii with B. smithi, with material collected at the type sites.

In the footsteps of the great tarantula collector Herbert Huntingdon Smith

In the 1890’s one of the greatest tarantula collectors in history set forth down the Pacific coast of Mexico, braving brigands to collect spiders and insects for the British Museum of Natural History. Following in his footsteps 130 years later, Andrew Smith and his field team rediscovered Smith’s original type sites – the brigands having been replaced by the new menace of the drug cartels. In this two hour documentary, once again you will see the first field footage ever shot of Brachypelma boehmei, Brachypelma smithi, Brachypelma albiceps and the gorgeous flame knee – Brachypelma auratum plus Tliltocatl verdezi.
